Welcome to the Buxheim library. This site
represents an attempt to recreate virtually a fifteenth-century library.
The library once present at the Carthusian monastery of Buxheim, Germany,
was one of the largest of its kind. The manuscripts now reside in over fifty
libraries across Europe and North America, and some remain in private hands.
Many remain unlocated or unidentified since their sale and dispersion at
auction in 1883. This project will, over the next several years, bring these
manuscripts together again, if only in the form of interactive catalogs
and databases. The project will take many years to realize, but it is hoped
that the current pages will give you an idea of what value such a concept
can have for our understanding of late medieval and early modern librarianship
and codicology. You may view the manuscript catalogs either through the
