To: Foreign Language Faculty
Each spring, the Center for Language Study supports innovation in foreign language instruction by funding and supporting projects that include materials development, curriculum design, the integration of new pedagogical methods, and research. This year, we write to share three possible opportunities for seeking such support.
1. Instructional Innovation Workshop
This multi-day workshop in early June is for faculty who wish to explore ways in which the use of multimedia materials can enhance language teaching and learning. It will include hands-on demonstrations of activity templates developed at the CLS (Vision, ART, Exercises, and others), as well as other digital video tools and resources, such as iMovie, YouTube, CDigix, and QuickTime. Each attendee will be expected to conceive of and create a sample activity or learning unit. The workshop will include time for participants to work on their projects, and one-on-one support will be available. To ensure ample access to support, space will be limited to ten participants. Though faculty with any degree of project experience may apply, this workshop is ideal for those who have been considering a project but have never applied for an IIG. More information, including dates and details on applications and stipends, will be announced soon.
2. Annual Instructional Innovation Grant (IIG) Competition
Eligible proposal topics for the limited number of awards available this year are: (a) creation of web-based placement tests (either new projects or continuations of current ones), and (b) for up to two participants in the June workshop, continuation and expansion of a materials development effort begun during the workshop. IIG awards will be announced in early April, so grantees will be able to plan ahead to tie their workshop efforts to the larger projects. Initial consultations must take place by February 15, 2008; this step is required of all applicants. Final proposals will be due March 24. 2008.
3. Professional Development Leaves
Earlier this month, the Provost announced an opportunity for non-ladder faculty to seek paid, semester-long leaves to work on projects that relate directly to their teaching. For the full-time language teachers who are eligible to apply, these leaves are excellent opportunities to devote time and attention to major instructional innovation endeavors. For this first year of the program, the timetable is extremely tight: applications must be submitted to departments or programs by January 31, 2008 for leaves planned for the fall of 2008 OR the spring of 2009. To ensure sufficient availability of resources, faculty currently considering leaves for projects that require the support of CLS staff should consult with their liaisons immediately on their plans. For more information on this opportunity, please see the Provost's January 18 email or contact the CLS.
These three options represent a range of possibilities for faculty working on projects at any stage, from smaller, nascent projects suitable for the workshop to more comprehensive, longer-term projects that demand more extensive focus and commitment. If you have any questions about these opportunities, contact your CLS liaison or Mark Knowles, Assistant Director of the CLS (mark.knowles@yale.edu).
