During the Spring of 2002, the CLS is hosting a series professional
development seminars workshops. All members of the Yale community
involved with or interested in language instruction are welcome to
attend. Topics focus on important issues in language teaching and
learning, varying focus between the pedagogical and the technological
(many topics span both domains).
Seminars and workshops will be held on the dates listed below. In
response to requests from faculty, we are varying the days of the week
and the locations on campus where events will be held. Check the
schedule below for details. All events will begin at 4:00PM.
Many presentations held at 212 York St. are videotaped. If you
wish to view or borrow a tape of a particular presentation, contact the

Seminar: What is a Methodology? And Do We Care? presented by Nina Garrett, Director of Language Study, CLS
Nina Garrett will lead a discussion on methodology,
to include: To what extent can we call our teaching a methodology? What
is the difference between a methodology and a theory? How do we analyze
and improve methodology? How can we find out more about what
methodologies are used by others? What do we mean by words like
"approach" and "technique"?

Workshop: Synchronous computer mediated communication (CMC) in Foreign Language Learning presented by the CLS technology staff
During this hands-on demonstration, participants
will chat in the classes server environment. Pedagogical applications
of synchronous CMC as well as well as learning opportunities and
implications will be explored in the discussion to follow. |

Editing Digital Audio with CoolEdit
The presenter will review basic concepts of digital
audio and introduce new users to the CoolEdit audio editing software.
This workshop is designed for instructors who are completely new to
audio editing as well as those who have a little experience with
CoolEdit. (Advanced features will be mentioned, but not covered in
detail.) Pedagogical materials consisting of digital audio can be
turned into audio CDs or published to a web site. Instructors
interested in recording and editing audio for use in Oral Production
Tests will also benefit from this workshop.

Creating Multimedia Presentations with Microsoft PowerPoint presented by the CLS technology staff
Microsoft PowerPoint is a versatile, yet easy-to-use
application for developing multimedia presentations. This workshop will
cover the basics of creating presentations, as well as tips for taking
presentations with you to various kinds of Yale classrooms and
delivering them during classes and lectures. |
