A number of Yale organizations provide resources for students who are non-native speakers of English. These include the Center for Language Study (CLS), the English Language Institute (ELI), the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS), and the Yale College Writing Center. The following web pages list some of the available resources at Yale, in New Haven, and on the Web. Tutoring & Conversation Partners
- CLS Foreign Language Tutoring and Conversation Partners: The Center for Language Study offers a tutoring and conversation partners program.
- ELI Conversation Partners Language Training Program: This program offers a one-hour language tutorial with a professional instructor. Contact Jan Hortas, Director of Yale's English Language Institute (ELI), at jan.hortas@yale.edu for more information.
- OISS One-on-One Conversations: This program matches international students and scholars at Yale with volunteers from the New Haven and Yale communities for language and culture exchange.
- Bridges: This non-profit New Haven organization provides free one-on-one or small-group English tutoring to immigrants in the community.
Conversation Groups
- OISS English Conversation Groups: The Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) These informal conversation groups are facilitated by experienced Yale staffers and community volunteers according to the needs and interests of the attendees. Anyone in the Yale community at any language level is welcome. There is no registration - Just show up! Contact the OISS at oiss@yale.edu or check OISS annoucements for a current schedule.
Language Learning Resources at the CLS
The CLS Media Library is an online database listing the CLS' collection of audio, video, software, and texts for language learning. You may request desired materials at the CLS reception desk. Note: All materials must be used within the CLS. Your I.D. will be held at the reception desk until you have returned the materials.
In addition to the video collection at the Center for Language Study, the Yale Film Study Center has a large collection of films, which can be searched by Yale students through the Film Study Center's video collection database.
